Abaché and Kazoola
An African American woman and man pose together outdoors. Abaché, also known as Clara Turner, and Kazoola, also known as Cudjoe Lewis, were formerly enslaved people who had been brought to the United States aboard the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to bring captives from Africa to the U.S. They were from present-day Benin, and after emancipation were a part of the community of freedmen known as Africatown in Mobile, Alabama. |
