The bi-planes in this image, like most early airplanes, are of the "pusher" type, that is, the propellers were located behind the pilot, in effect, pushing the plane through the air. Pusher planes were replaced by the modern "tractor" configuration in which the propellers are located at the front of the plane. The plane to Curtiss' left is an improvement on his basic design because there is room for a flight instructor or passenger. |
