He worked as a railroad telegrapher and station agent in Minnesota (1891-1895), and in 1895 moved to Wisconsin, settling in Shell Lake where he was bookkeeper for the Shell Lake Lumber Co. (1895-1901). In 1901 he became cashier of the Lumberman's Bank in Shell Lake, served in this capacity from 1901 to 1925, and became its president in 1925. Smith was president (1922-1923) of the Wisconsin Bankers Association, was instrumental in establishing the Shell Lake Cooperative Creamery, and was secretary of the Wisconsin Co-operative Creameries Association (1923-1947). A Republican, he was elected state treasurer in 1938, was three times re-elected, and served from Jan., 1939, until his death. Wis. Blue Book (1946); Madison Wis.
