He taught in various local schools (1879-1890), was Manitowoc County superintendent of schools (1890-1894), and principal of Manitowoc high school (1894-1898). From 1898 until his death he served as supervisor of practice teaching and placement director of the Milwaukee State Normal School (called Milwaukee State Teachers College after 1927). Patzer was also chairman of the legislative committee of the state teachers' association, and in this capacity advocated the creation of a state board of education, a county board system of educational control, and elimination of the office of state superintendent of public instruction.
