"Born at Vincennes, Ind., Oct. 12, 1782. Early settled in Missouri, where in 1808 he served as sheriff, and commanded an expedition up the Missouri against the hostile Indians, in 1814. In 1827 he moved to Wisconsin and took a prominent part in quelling the Winnebago uprising of that year, and in the Black Hawk war in 1832. He was first Territorial governor of Wisconsin, 1836-41, a delegate in congress, 1841-45, again Territorial governor, 1845-48 and United States senator, 1848-57. He died at Burlington, Iowa, June 19, 1867. Full size [portrait], painted by [James] Bowman, a Pittsburg artist, at Green Bay, in 1836, just after Dodge was appointed governor of the Territory of Wisconsin."
