Sixth plate daguerreotype of Frederick Moessner wearing a fireman's hat for Madison Engine Co. No. 2. He was one of the original members of Madison Fire Company No. 2, signing the constitution on June 23, 1856. He last appears on their payrolls (fire fighters got a uniform/supply payment each month) during March 1859.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Oval stamped mat, case lacking its cover. Moessner was born April 9, 1832 in Gondelsheim, Baden, Germany. He came with his parents to Dane County, Wisconsin in 1849. The next year he went to Milwaukee where he spent two years learning the confectionary trade. Between 1852 and 1866 he tried to make a living in Galena, IL, St. Louis, MO, and Chicago. IL, always coming back to Madison for a few years between each move. In 1866 he permanently settled down in Madison opening a bakery on King street. In 1858 he married Catherine Dell (1849-1918), who was born in Castell, Germany and came to Janesville, WI in 1852. The couple had five daughters, Estella, Adelia, Alma, Lillie and Flora, and one son, Frederick R. Moessner. Frederick C. Moessner died in Madison on May 14, 1899.
