ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Building featured lights, flushing toilets, and steam heat--all novelties for University buildings. Besides a small art gallery, the hall's fourth floor museum also contained the Increase A. Lapham collection, geological and botanical specimens, and "the whitened bones of General Sherman's horse," all destroyed when the building burned in 1884. An engraving of the building which was published in The Legislative Manual for the State of Wisconsin in 1877 credits H.C. Koch as architect. Another source published by the University lists David R. Jones of Madison as architect. When completed in 1876 it was "... the pride of regents and officers of the University," according to a two-volume history written by Curti and Carstensen.
