Reproduction prints and filed delivered on CD are shipped in protective packaging with an S&H charge of $5.00. There is no additional charge for files delivered via email or FTP.

The majority of our unframed prints are
rolled and shipped in a reinforced tube tested for strength and
stability. Smaller items are shipped flat in sturdy rectangular
packaging and padded with cardboard shipping materials.
8. What are your standards for image quality?
Most images in our online collections have been digitized on a flatbed
scanner at 400 ppi at 8 x 10 inches. Oversized items are scanned with
a digital back mounted to a 4 x 5 camera. Scans are color corrected in
the Adobe RGB 1998 color working space for levels, curve and hue
saturation adjustments. In some cases, online images contain a
watermark to identify WHS as the owner and prevent unauthorized
reproduction. Prints and scans ordered from WHS Images do not include
the watermark.
9. How are print reproductions produced?
The WHS Digital Lab produces quality arhival pigment print reproductions made
from high resolution scans of original source material in our
holdings. Custom orders are printed on matte or semigloss papers using
large format printers and archival pigmented inks. Images are printed
uncropped and may not be proportional to the print size requested. All
print sale proceeds directly benefit the acquisition, preservation and
maintenance of the physical and online collections.
10. May I use WHS Images reproductions for a commercial project?
WHS Images produces custom digital file reproductions for commercial
publishers in traditional print, editorial and advertising as well as
for multimedia projects like films, videos, websites, CD-ROMs and
podcasts. Our Digital Lab can deliver high resolution TIF and JPG
files via email, FTP or CD. See our Reproduction Price List (PDF, 32KB) for details.
11. What can I do with the digital file I purchased?
We provide digital files only for commercial projects,
and require submission of a Permission Request Form in advance of
these uses. Digital files are not to be used to generate prints foor personal or resale purposes. All prints must be ordered from the Historical Society;
you may not make your own prints from a digital file. See Permissions & Copyright for
more information.
12. What can I do with the print I purchased?
You may display it in your home or give it as a gift. We discourage the intermediary use of purchasing a print for publishing purposes because of quality concerns. If you do decide to publish the image in any form,
you must obtain permission in advance from the Wisconsin Historical
Society. See Permissions & Copyright for more information.
13. Who owns copyright on these images?
The Wisconsin Historical Society owns copyright for a small number of
images in its collections. In some cases, the Society has written
agreements with copyright holders. Many of the images in the collections are old
enough that copyright has lapsed. In most cases, however, it is not
clear who owns copyright, or if the image is even under copyright protection. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the
user of these images to determine whether a copyright issue exists and
if so, to contact the copyright owner. See Permissions & Copyright for
more information.
14. Can the WHS Digital Lab digitally retouch images?
In some cases, our lab technicians can digitally retouch images to fix
damaged areas or adjust for other problems inherent in the source
material. Contact Business Manager Lisa Marine at lisa.marine@wisconsinhistory.org before making an order to determine whether it is
possible for us to retouch a particular image. Such work will incur
additional charges.
15. I know of a WHS Image that is not
available online — can I order a reproduction?
Our online image database represents a small fraction of the 3 million
images in the Visual Materials Archives of the Wisconsin Historical
Society. Currently, less than 2% of our total visual materials
collections are available online, but we continue to add hundreds of
new items to our image database each month. To request an image from
our holdings, complete and submit our Reproduction Order Form (PDF, 52KB). Note: a negative or WHS Image ID number is required. If you do
not have a number, please contact us at askphotos@wisconsinhistory.org to request an image search.
If you wish to publish a WHS Image, you must
obtain permission in advance from the Wisconsin Historical Society.
You must complete a Permission Request Form (PDF, 36KB) and pay any associated permission fees before using the image(s). We will then send you a
Letter of Permission. See Permissions & Copyright for more
information.
16. Do prints look exactly like the images we see online?
We work hard to ensure fidelity between the images you see online and our published prints, but the tonal range of the papers we use and the calibration of your computer's monitor can be different that what you see on screen depending on the particular image you order. Additionally we best fit images onto standard paper sizes so most most images will have a white border which may change your perception of the image.
