Historic Sites Swing Into Summer

An heirloom garden at
Old World Wisconsin
Summer is here, and Wisconsin's historic sites are abuzz with activity as farmers work their fields and gardens, attend to farm animals, and do a litany of other chores straight out of the 19th century. Old World Wisconsin has several festive events in its season-long special events lineup, including the ever-popular Laura Ingalls Wilder Days on Saturday and Sunday, July 26-27, a game of vintage base ball (as the sport's name was spelled in the game's early days) on Saturday, August 2, and an Old World County Fair on Saturday, August 16.
Wade House, an 1860s stagecoach inn built as a pit stop and lodging place for travelers on the old plank road that connected Fond du Lac and Sheboygan, will feature historic games of vintage 1860s base ball every third Sunday afternoon of the season through September. Fans can flock to Wade House to see how differently the game was played during the 1860s. Game times are 1:30 p.m.
Across the state, nestled alongside the Mississippi River, the historic Villa Louis Victorian mansion offers daily tours highlighting the mansion's breathtaking, top-to-bottom restoration that returned the house and the adjacent office building to the elegance of their 1890s heyday. And on Saturday and Sunday, July 19-20, the lawn of the Villa Louis becomes an encampment of British-Canadian and American soldiers who will re-enact the only battle of the War of 1812 fought on Wisconsin soil at 2:30 each afternoon.
Circus World has kicked off its 50th live performance season, featuring a daily performance schedule that includes a Classic American Circus show twice daily at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., the Razzle Dazzle Revue Variety Show at 1 p.m., and tours of Historic Ringlingville, comprising the remaining structures of the original Ringling Bros. Circus Winter Quarters. Other acts include KidsWorld Circus, where kids are the stars of the show, at 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m., a Clowning Around Show at 2:45 p.m., the Illusions of Reality Magic Show at 5:15 p.m., and much, much more. Of course, no trip to Circus World is complete without a stop to see its incredible collection of antique circus wagons — the largest collection of its kind in the world.
