Job Duties
Under the general supervision of the Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer, this position performs administrative and professional work as primary architect of the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentive and Wisconsin state tax credit programs in the eastern region.
The position independently reviews plans and specifications for conformance with the U.S. Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and advises applicants in meeting the Standards.
This position manages all aspects of the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentive and Wisconsin Home Owner Tax Credit programs including assuring adherence to all federal and state legal requirements for the programs; overseeing the flow of work involving staff in the division; as well as advising professional consultants, other state and federal officials, and the general public.
This position provides architectural expertise for other aspects of the historic preservation program as needed, including review of projects submitted under section 106 of the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and Wis.Stats Chapter 44.40 and 66.67.
This program consults with and educates architects, property owners, public officials, and the general public about tax credits, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation, and other historic preservation related topics. Occasional travel to locations throughout the state of Wisconsin for daytime and evening meetings is required.

- Applicant must meet the professional qualifications for architecture which are described in Title 36, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 61 (36 CFR 61), Appendix A which includes a professional degree in Architecture, plus two years of full-time experience in architecture OR a State License to practice architecture in any state plus at least two years of full- time professional architectural experience on historic preservation projects.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Familiarity with architectural and building material terminology.
- Knowledge of professional architectural design, construction, and practices.
- Understanding of proper architectural treatments for historic buildings.
- Ability to read and correctly interpret architectural drawings, plans and specifications, scopes of work, and other technical architectural materials.
- Familiarity and expertise with pc applications including word processing, email, spreadsheets, and other applications, including conversions and formatting.
- Skill and fluency in written English, including strong technical writing ability with demonstrated ability to convey complex information in a readable and instructive format.
- Ability to provide instructive guidance to people with varying levels of skill, ability, and temperament.
- Ability to assign, track, coordinate and manage multiple projects.
- Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, mediation skills, and ability to work collaboratively with others.
