Champion Prize Envelope - Lincoln & Davis in 5 Rounds, 4th Round
Winfield Scott and William Seward stand in the boxing ring in which Lincoln fought Davis. Text at top reads, "CHAMPION PRIZE ENVELOPE - LINCOLN & DAVIS IN 5 ROUNDS," underneath reads "4TH ROUND." Lincoln stands outside the ring on the left as the Union army retreats. He has a globe of the world under his arm as he says "I HAVE TAKEN THE WORLD BY SURPRISE." Seward comments, "GENERAL WHERE IS SECESSION NOW?" and Scott replies "DON'T YOU SEE THAT GREASE SPOT?" Outside the ring on Lincoln's side are the retreating Union troops with cannons, generals, statesmen and the Capitol building with the Union flag. On the right side are Confederate spectators John Minor Botts, John J. Crittenden and others with palm trees in the background. Below them appears the text, "VIRGINIA AND KENTUCKY MAY NOW BE HEARD IN BEHALF OF THE WHOLE UNION." Black ink on beige envelope, image covers entire envelope. Image printed on envelope, mounted on various colored pages and collected in an album. |
