Industrialist and inventor Cyrus Hall McCormick (1809-1884) is credited with the invention of the reaper. This portrait of McCormick was painted by Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) in 1867. The painting was presented to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in 1951 as part of the McCormick Collection of manuscript papers and agricultural implements. The papers presently constitute one of the largest and most important archival collections held by the Society. |
