Wade Hampton
Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Confederate Lieutenant General Wade Hampton III. Prior to the of the war, he was one of the largest slave owners in the South. When the war started he helped to organize and equip Hampton's South Carolina Legion, where he held the rank of Colonel. At the Battle of Gettysburg he held the rank of Brigadier General and commanded a cavalry brigade during the battle. In August 1863 he was promoted to Major General, commanding a cavalry division in the Army of Northern Virginia, eventually becoming Commander of the Cavalry Corps. In 1865 he received his last promotion to Lieutenant General and commanded the cavalry in the Army of Tennessee and a division in the Army of Northern Virginia. |
