Dr. John Maynard Woodworth, Physician
Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Dr. John Maynard Woodworth (1837-1879), American physician and naturalist. In 1871, Woodworth became the first Surgeon General of the United States. He was one of the organizers of the Chicago Academy of Science and in 1858 became curator of its museum. Woodworth served under General William Tecumseh Sherman as a surgeon in the Civil War, and lead the ambulence train during "Sherman's March," without losing a single man. Shown in a Russian-American fur trapper's costume. Handwritten inscription at bottom of card reads: "John M. Woodworth, 1865." |

Essen, vis à vis dem Berg: Märk; Bahnhof." Handwritten inscription on back reads, "Compliments of John M. Woodworth, Chicago." From album of portrait photographs collected by Lapham depicting scientists and artists, ca. 1860-ca. 1875. Images include portraits of geologists, botanists, sculptors, and authors. One of two portraits of Woodworth in album (see Image ID: 47681). Album includes a note, which reads, "Dr. John S. Woodworth and Robert Kennicott of Chicago went to Russian Dunerica [?] for the Government. Collections made by them were burned in Academy of Science building in Chicago fire of 1871.
