Len Schmitt Senate Campaign
Len Schmitt, former Progressive Party legislator from Merrill, led the Republican opposition to Senator Joseph R. McCarthy's bid for re-election. Schmitt attempted to call attention to his "Decency in Government" campaign with a 25-hour radio talkathon. He is seated here with Mike Griffin, a radio announcer and his campaign manager; a local radio announcer is to his left. Schmitt anticipated there would be no Senate primary race on the Democratic ticket which would have allowed Democrats to cross over and vote for him. Instead there was a tight race between Henry Reuss and Thomas Fairchild. Senator McCarthy handily defeated Schmitt in the primary. |
