Robert M. La Follette, Jr., and William Green
Senator Robert M. La Follette, Jr., and William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, debate a point during a Mutual Broadcasting System radio program. La Follette had a reputation as a friend of labor unions, built primarily on his investigation of the methods labor opponents had used to prevent unions from organizing. By the time of his 1946 re-election campaign, however, Wisconsin labor had shifted its allegiance to the growing state Democratic Party. Their decision to vote for the unopposed Democratic candidate in the primary election, rather than La Follette who was running in the Republican primary, was a decisive factor in the election of La Follette's opponent, Joseph R. McCarthy. |
