Jairus Fairchild House

Jairus Fairchild House | Painting | Wisconsin Historical Society
Jairus Cassius Fairchild, the first mayor of Madison, built this house in 1850 at 302 South Wisconsin Avenue (renamed Monona Avenue in 1877) at West Wilson St. near Lake Monona. The house was later substantially altered with additions. After the Civil War, the house became the home of Fairchild's son, Lucius, Civil War hero, Wisconsin governor (1866-72) and foreign diplomat. During his six years as governor, the Fairchild House was the state's executive residence, as no such property was then owned by the state. The residence was therefore a focus of Madison's social life during the last half of the 19th century.
