In an Apache dance hall with artists' sketches chalked upon the walls, the opera singer Sonia Smirnov (played by Olga Petrova) sits at a rough table surrounded by her male admirers. To her right is Lachaise (played by Count Carl Gustaf Sixtensson Lewenhaupt), and on her left is Alan Hall (Mahlon Hamilton) in this scene still for the silent drama "The Black Butterfly." A dozen or more unidentified actors costumed as members of the Parisian underworld are in the background.

DESCRIPTION

"A Parisian Caveau where the Apaches and their gigolettes drink, dine and dance is realistically depicted in 'The Black Butterfly,' the Metro wonderplay in which Mme. Petrova is starred. Mme. Petrova herself, with the aid of her cameraman, Andre Barlitier, staged and directed this scene at the Popular Plays and Players studio. Real Apache dancing is also a feature of the play and is given by artists of the first rank. Emile Agoust and his wife Simone de Beryl contribute a dancing duet and another gamin dance is done by Lula Paleaologus and Fred von Stange." "Motography" 28 October 1916, p. 995.
